In 1997, Claussen graduated from Goddard High School in Roswell, New Mexico. One year later, he was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 34th round of the 1998 MLB amateur draft. In 1999, he graduated from Howard Junior College in Big Spring, Texas. He played in the Yankees' minor league system until June 28, 2003, when he made his major league debut, when he was brought up to the major league level for a brief stint. On July 31, 2003, he was traded to Cincinnati Reds with Charlie Manning and cash for Aaron Boone. On January 12, 2007 he signed a minor league deal with the Washington Nationals.
